Caring for Moreton Bay Marine Park

The Australian Marine Conservation Society welcomes the recommendation of scientists that, in line with minimum international standards, a “minimum” of 10% of each habitat in Moreton Bay Marine Park should be fully protected in green zones. This is a good starting point for discussions but most scientists would agree that Moreton Bay deserves so much more protection. SE Queensland’s booming population, coupled with the highest boat ownership in the country, the threat of climate change impacts and continued decline of the parks habitats and species, like turtles and dugongs, all point to the need to achieve so much more than what some out-of-date international minimum for protection could provide. We can do better than that.
